Shanghai 2026: Gea stuns Shelton, the only Frenchman into the last 16

In the third round, Arthur Gea beat Ben Shelton when 100% of predictors had backed the American. Mannarino, Halys and Fils are out.

Four French players reached the third round of the Shanghai Masters 1000, and only one came out of it: Arthur Gea, author of the biggest upset of the round.

Gea topples Shelton

On Sunday, Arthur Gea beat Ben Shelton in two tie-breaks, 7-6(5), 7-6(3). A win nobody saw coming on PredicTennis.

Halys pushes Zverev

Quentin Halys took Alexander Zverev to a third set, winning the second in a tie-break, before going down 4-6, 7-6(8), 3-6.

The end of the road for Mannarino and Fils

Adrian Mannarino couldn't find a way past Karen Khachanov and lost 2-6, 4-6. On Monday, Arthur Fils was beaten by Botic van de Zandschulp 5-7, 4-6.

Third-round predictions

Across the four matches involving French players, 26 predictions were made: 58% picked the right winner, but only 15% the exact score.

  • Gea – Shelton: the big upset of the round. All 7 predictors had picked Shelton, so nobody scored on this match.
  • Halys – Zverev: the opposite case, 100% of predictions for Zverev, all correct. Only one called the three-set score.
  • Mannarino – Khachanov: unanimous again for Khachanov, and two predictors called the 2-0.
  • Fils – Van de Zandschulp: 4 predictors out of 5 backed Fils. The only one who picked Van de Zandschulp also got the exact score.

What happened next?

Arthur Gea kept going in the round of 16, beating Jakub Mensik 7-6(4), 6-4, before retiring in the quarter-finals against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina while trailing 4-1 in the first set. Saturday's semi-finals pit Alexander Zverev against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Rafael Jodar against Daniil Medvedev.
