Shanghai 2026: quarter-final review, three winners out of four against the predictors

The end of the road for Arthur Gea, forced to retire, and tricky quarter-finals: Zverev, Jodar and Davidovich Fokina won when most predictors had backed their opponent.

The quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters 1000 were played on Thursday and Friday. They ended Arthur Gea's fine run and gave predictors a hard time.

Gea forced to retire

The last Frenchman standing couldn't see his match through. Trailing 4-1 in the first set against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Arthur Gea retired. He leaves Shanghai with a Masters 1000 quarter-final and wins over Jaime Faria, Ugo Humbert, Ben Shelton and Jakub Mensik.

Quarter-final results

  • Alejandro Davidovich Fokina beat Arthur Gea, who retired at 4-1 in the first set
  • Alexander Zverev beat Alex De Minaur 6-4, 6-4
  • Rafael Jodar beat Casper Ruud 4-6, 6-4, 6-3
  • Daniil Medvedev beat Tommy Paul 6-3, 1-6, 6-3

Quarter-final predictions

Across the four matches, 24 predictions were made on PredicTennis: only 46% picked the right winner, and 17% the exact score. Three of the four winners were not the community's favourites.

  • Jodar – Ruud: 3 predictors out of 5 backed Ruud. Both who picked Jodar also called the three-set score.
  • Davidovich Fokina – Gea: 4 predictors out of 7 had chosen the Frenchman. With the retirement in the first set, nobody could get the exact score.
  • Medvedev – Paul: the only favourite to go through, picked by 3 predictors out of 5.

On to the semi-finals
